If you stay tuned to the automotive world, then you know that Toyota reigns over the land of hybrids. However, here's something you might not have heard. The pioneering automaker is also one of the strongest advocates of fuel-cell technology. Prime example: the Toyota FCV-R concept.

Housed in a metallic baby-blue hue, the Toyota fuel-cell model derives power from hydrogen stored in high-pressure cylinders. For those unfamiliar with the powertrain process, small, efficient fuel-cell stacks convert the hydrogen into usable electricity. In the case of the Toyota FCV-R, such stacks are kept under the vehicle's passenger cell in order to maintain ample space and cargo capacity. In addition to plenty of wiggle room, the model offers a drive range of 700-km or approximately 435-miles. True, these vehicle fixings come at a high cost. But with zero need to fill up at the pump, Tansky Toyota thinks the trade-off is pretty well balanced.

Though the FCV-R, standing for Fuel Cell Vehicle - Reality (and Revolution), was initially revealed at Tokyo back in November, it made a second appearance at Detroit. While the alternative concept received little attention compared to fellow Prius C and NS4 concepts, the FCV-R goes to show that Toyota is far from putting fuel cell technology on the back burner. In fact, officials say that consumers can expect to see a hydrogen-powered Toyota model as soon as 2015.

At this point, that day seems far-off. But in model years, 2015 is only a handful of automotive shows away.
