Toyota Develops New Accident-Avoidance Technology
There isn't a Toyota driver in the Dublin, Ohio area who doesn't want to steer clear of accidents. At best, they're a headache. At worst, they result in serious accidents. Unfortunately, there isn't often time enough for drivers to stop short or determine which way to turn... It's times like these when we all wish our cars, SUVs, CUVs, and trucks could take care of it for us.
You'll be happy to know: Toyota is working on it! At a recent media event, the Japanese automaker revealed a leading-edge accidence-avoidance technology. Designed with carefully integrated network of cameras, millimeter-wave radar and microprocessors, the system can effectively calculate and implement the exact braking and steering adjustments needed to avoid collisions.
While the new pre-collision steering system is expected to reduce accidents caused by a car stopping short, or a darting animal, Toyota's primary goal is to reduce accidents involving pedestrians. After doing some quick digging, we've found that more pedestrians are hit by cars every year than we could ever have imagined.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports data showing that 4,000-plus pedestrians were struck in the U.S., in 2009 alone. And, according to a more recent study performed by the District Department of Transportation, more crashes occur in the crosswalks of D.C. than the city's roads.
While Toyota hasn't announced when they will start fitting their models with the pre-collision steering system, we expect it will be soon. So, watch out Volvo!
